"The relationship between the community of Awo Omamma and the USC, Inc., has developed into a true partnership."

The UUSC began work in the Awo Omamma village in Nigeria, Africa in 1958. It was headed by field coordinator Ben Nzeribe, a local who received his PhD from Cornell University, and would go on to become a member of the Nigerian Parliament. The UUSC helped to establish baby clinics that greatly reduced infant mortality, as well as established nutrition and clean water programs. Regular teaching workshops led by trained local nurses also ensured better hygiene and sanitation in the area. With funds collected from villagers, the Nigerian government, and the UUSC, they also built a school, library, post office, and a 75-bed hospital.
