The Navajo

The UUSC’s work with the Navajo in New Mexico began in 1952 when they formed an agreement by which the UUSC provided staff and financial support for a community center in Gallup. The land had been donated by the town of Gallup, and the government paid for the building itself, but there were not enough funds to operate the community center until the UUSC stepped in to help. Working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the UUSC helped to register voters, and offered social services and education programs to Navajo children and adults in the area.
